This article describes how to install Milestone XProtect Professional IP video surveillance software, and how to configure the software to work with the AlphaCom XE Demo suitcase.

On the USB memory stick coming with the demo suitcase you find:

  • The Milestone Professional software ver. 7.0
  • The Software License Code (SLC) and Device License Key (DLK) for connecting to the camera

Installation Instructions

Installing Milestone XProtect Professional on a PC:

  1. On the USB memory stick, locate and run the file MilestoneXProtectProfessionalSystem_en-US.msi.
  2. When the installation wizard starts, click Next to continue.
  3. Read and accept the End User License Agreement, then click Next.
  4. Select Typical installation and follow the instructions.
  5. Enter a username (admin), organisation (e.g. Microsoft) and the Software License Code SLC, then click Next.
  6. Click Finish on the last step to complete the installation.

Import the Device License Key DLK:

  1. Open the Management Application.
  2. In the Management Application’s File menu, select Import DLKs...
  3. Browse to the location of the .dlk file (e.g. the USB memory stick), select the file, and click Open. The DLK is now imported into XProtect Professional.

Note that the DLK is related to the MAC address of the camera coming with the suitcase, and the Milestone software will work for that camera only. The 12 digit MAC address (S/N) is found on the rear side of the IP camera.

Configuration Instructions

Assign IP address 192.168.1.2 to the PC. The IP camera is preconfigured with IP address 192.168.1.20

Add the camera XProtect Professional:

  1. In the Management Application, start the Add Hardware Devices wizard.
  2. Select a hardware detection method, and follow the wizard.
Tip: We recommend the Express option: it scans your network for relevant hardware devices, and helps you quickly add them to your system. Note, however, that the Express option only scans for hardware devices supporting device discovery (a method with which hardware devices make information about themselves available on the network), and only on the part of your network (subnet) where the XProtect Professional server itself is located.

Continue with the steps below to connect the software to your camera:

  • Open the Administrator by clicking the Administrator shortcut on the desktop.
  • Click the Add Device button in the Administrator main window.
  • Type the device IP address 192.168.1.20. Click Next.
  • Type the password “root”. Leave the Autodetect Device option selected, and click Next.
  • When the device is detected, type the Device License Key (DLK) for the device (camera) and click Next.
  • Enter descriptive name Entrance for the device, then click Finish.

Do the following to configure the Matrix function:

  • Click the Matrix button in the Administrator main window.
  • In the Config tab enable “Milestone XProtect Matrix”, and enter a name, the IP address of your PC (192.168.1.2), port number 12345 and password 12345. Enable “Smart Client”. Click Add, Apply and OK.
  • Click the Generic Events button in the Administrator main window. Click Add new event.
  • Enter event name Camera 104 and Event substring Cam104. Click Add and OK.
  • Click Add new event again. Enter event name Disconnect and Event substring CamOff. Click Add and OK.
  • Click the Matrix button in the Administrator main window.
  • Highlight your PC in the list, and select the Event tab.
  • Right click the matrix icon and select Generic. Then select Camera 104.
  • Right click Camera 104, and select Connect. Right click Connect and select Entrance.
  • Right click the matrix icon again and select Generic. Then select Disconnect.
  • Right click Disconnect, and select Disconnect.
  • Exit the Administrator

Users access to images is handled by the ImageServer service, which automatically runs in the background on your XProtect Professional server.

Do the following to configure the ImageServer service:

  • Open the Image Server Administrator window; either from Windows Start menu, or by double-clicking the ImageServer Administrator desktop shortcut.
  • Click the User Setup button to specify which users should be able to connect to your system. Do not forget to add yourself. Use Basic Users. Basic Users are users authenticated by a simple user name and password combination.
  • Having added users, you can simply select Full access for all users.
  • Close the ImageServer Administrator. If Windows Firewall pops up asking to unblock, select Yes.

Open TCP port 1234 in the Windows firewall of the PC running Milestone server:

  • Windows XP: Start > Control Panel > Windows Firewall > Exceptions tab > Add Port: Select port type: TCP. Name: Milestone. Port number: 1234.

To display images from the camera:

  • Start the Smart Client; either from Windows Start menu, or by double-clicking the Smart Client desktop shortcut.
  • Log in with one of the users defined in the ImageServer Administrator.
  • Create your first private view, by first creating a group under the Setup tabs Private top-level folder, and then create a 1x1 view within the group.
  • From the Setup tabs System Overview section, drag the Matrix icon into the view and release it. The view will get a blue borderline, indicating matrix function.
  • While the main window is in focus, click Connection Settings in the Properties selection, and enter port number 12345 and password 12345.
  • Click the Live tab in order to see live images from the camera during calls between IP substation 104 and the CRMV station.
