This article describes how to install Milestone XProtect Professional IP video surveillance software, and how to configure the software to work with the AlphaCom XE Demo suitcase.

The setup is also shown in this video: Milestone_setup


On the USB memory stick coming with the demo suitcase you find:

  • The Milestone Professional software ver. 7.0
  • A text file with the Software License Code (SLC.txt)
  • A .dlk file with the Device License Key (DLK) for connecting to the camera


Installation Instructions

Installing Milestone XProtect Professional on a PC

IMPORTANT: XE1 DemoSuitcases delivered before July 2012 must install Milestone XProtect Professional version 7. Deliveries made from July 2012 onwards MUST install Milestone XProtect Professional version 8.

  1. On the USB memory stick, locate and run the file MilestoneXProtectProfessionalSystem_en-US.msi. Alternatively, download and install the file from http://www.milestonesys.com/Downloads.
  2. When the installation wizard starts, click Next to continue.
  3. Read and accept the End User License Agreement, then click Next.
  4. Select "Typical installation".
  5. Select "Install licensed version"
  6. Enter a username (e.g. admin), organisation (e.g. Microsoft) and the Software License Code SLC found in the SLC.txt file, then click Next.
  7. Click Finish on the last step to complete the installation.


Importing the License Key

Milestone version 7 License installation on XE1 DemoSuitcases delivered before July 2012:

  1. Open the Management Application.
  2. In the Management Application’s File menu, select Import DLKs...
  3. Browse to the location of the .dlk file (e.g. the USB memory stick), select the file, and click Open. The DLK is now imported into XProtect Professional.

Note that the DLK is related to the MAC address of the camera coming with the suitcase, and the Milestone software will work with this camera only. The MAC address (S/N) is the 12 digit number found on the rear side of the IP camera.

Milestone version 8 License installation on XE1 DemoSuitcases delivered from July 2012 onwards:

  1. Open the Management Application.
  2. In the Management Application’s File menu, select "Manage License Offline" and then "Import License"
  3. Browse to the location of the .lic file(e.g. USB memory stick), select the file, and click Open.

The Management Application answers with "License imported successfully".

Configuration Instructions

Assign IP address 192.168.1.2 to the PC. The IP camera is preconfigured with IP address 192.168.1.20. Connect the PC and the camera to the network switch.

XProtect Professional Server

Add the camera to XProtect Professional

  1. In the Management Application, start the Add Hardware Devices wizard.
  2. Select the hardware device detection method Manual, and then click Next
  3. Leave the Use box cleared, enter Address 192.168.1.20, choose the default User Name <default>, enter Password "root" and select the default Hardware Driver option "Auto-detect hardware type". Click Auto-detect. The Verified box indicates whether access to the camera has been verified. Click Next.
  4. On the next page, click Finish.


Configure Matrix for Manual Video Sharing

  1. In the Management Application’s Navigation pane, expand Advanced Configuration, right-click Matrix and select Properties.
  2. Enable the use of Matrix by selecting the Enable Matrix check box.
  3. Specify required Matrix Recipients properties:
  • Name = Control Room
  • Address = 192.168.1.2
  • Port = 12345
  • Password = 12345
  • Check the box "Matrix recipient is a Smart Client", click Add

Add Generic Events

  1. In the Management Application’s navigation pane, expand Advanced Configuration, then expand Events and Output. Right-click Generic Events and select Add New Generic Event
  2. In the Generic Event Properties window, click the Add button, enter Event Name = Connect104 and Event substring = Cam104. Click the Add button to the right of the Event substring field. Then click OK.
  3. In the navigation pane, right-click Generic Events again and select Add New Generic Event
  4. In the Generic Event Properties window, click the Add button, enter Event Name = Disconnect and Event substring = CamOff. Click the Add button to the right of the Event substring field. Then click OK.


Configure Matrix for Automatic Video Sharing

  1. In the Management Application’s Navigation pane, expand Advanced Configuration, right-click Matrix and select Properties.
  2. Select Matrix Event Control and right-click the Matrix recipient.
  3. Select Generic > Connect104
  4. Right-click Connect104 and select Connect
  5. Right-click Connect and select Camera 1
  6. Right-click the Matrix recipient again, and select Generic > Disconnect
  7. Right-click Disconnect and select Disconnect
  8. Press OK


Configure User Access

  1. In the Management Application’s Navigation pane, select Wizards

PC firewall

Open the TCP port 1234 in the Windows firewall of the PC:

  • Windows XP: Start > Control Panel > Windows Firewall > Exceptions tab > Add Port: Select port type: TCP. Name: Milestone. Port number: 1234.

Smart Client

The Smart Client is used to display images from the camera. To configure the Smart Client, follow these steps:

  • Start the Smart Client; either from Windows Start menu, or by double-clicking the Smart Client desktop shortcut.
  • To log in, select Basic Authentication, and enter User name (e.g. demo) and Password (e.g. demo). Press Connect.
  • Select the Setup tab, right-click the Private folder, and create a New Group.
  • Right-click the New Group, and select New View > 4:3 > 1:1.
  • From the System Overview section, drag the Matrix icon into the view and release it. The view will get a blue borderline, indicating matrix function.
  • While the main window is in focus, scroll down to the Properties section and click Connection Settings. Enter port number 12345 and password 12345.
  • Click the Live tab in order to see live images from the camera during calls between IP substation 104 and the CRMV station.
