GPIO Description

GPIO (General Purpose Input/Output) contacts provide a simple interface for integrating external equipment with the audio system. Input contacts can be used to trigger predefined actions, such as initiating announcements, activating message playback, or changing system operating modes. Output contacts can be configured to indicate system status or control external devices, such as visual beacons, relays, door releases, or other third-party equipment. GPIO provides a flexible and reliable method of interfacing the system with building management, security, fire alarm, and other control systems.

Contact Inputs

  • The VIPEDIA-12 supports up to 12 configurable contact inputs, arranged in three groups of four. These inputs can be configured as either Volt Free or Volt Driven and allow external devices such as push buttons, switches, rotary controls, and relay contacts to trigger predefined system functions.

Contact Input Types

Volt Free Inputs

    • Activated by a simple contact closing or opening from external equipment such as switches, relays, or control panels.
    • Provides a simple digital trigger interface.

Monitored Volt Free Inputs

  • These are particularly useful, as it verifies the contact triggers are still in working order by adding a monitored resistor across them.

Volt Driven Inputs

    • Uses an external voltage signal from connected equipment.
    • Supports both digital and analogue signals for more flexible control options.

Input Functions

  • Volume Control [Volt Free / Volt Driven]
    • GPIO volume control inputs allow external devices, such as rotary dials or remote control panels, to adjust loudspeaker output levels. Inputs can be configured to increase or decrease volume settings for selected zones while maintaining any configured system limits, including volume attenuation controls.
  • Fixed Route [Volt Free / Volt Driven]
    • Used to activate a predefined audio route when a contact is triggered. Typical applications include triggering a stored DVA (Digitally Stored Voice Announcement) message to selected zones, initiating a specific announcement, or routing a fixed audio source to predefined outputs.
  • Source Select [Volt Free / Volt Driven]
    • Used to select a predefined audio source or input when activated. This can be used to change between audio sources such as microphone inputs, background music sources, or message playback sources.
  • VIPA Input [Volt Free / Volt Driven]
    • Used to trigger VIPA system functions and predefined routes. This can be used to initiate paging routes, select zones, activate audio paths, or control VIPA system operations from external equipment.
  • Cancel [Volt Free / Volt Driven]
    • Used to silence active announcements or alarms. This input can be used to mute selected outputs or place the system into a temporary silence state.
  • Silence [Volt Free / Volt Driven]
    • Used to silence active announcements or alarms. This input can be used to mute selected outputs or place the system into a temporary silence state.
  • Cancel Silence [Volt Free]
    • Used to restore audio operation after a silence command has been activated. This removes the silence condition and allows normal announcements and system operation to resume.
  • Fault Input [Volt Free / Volt Driven]
    • Used to monitor external fault signals and report equipment status to the PAVA system. Typical applications include monitoring amplifier faults, external equipment faults, or third-party system alarms.
  • PSU Fault Input [Volt Free / Volt Driven]
    • Used to monitor external power supply fault indications. This allows the VIPEDIA system to receive fault information from connected power supply equipment.
  • Clear Faults [Volt Driven]
    • Used to remotely clear or acknowledge active fault conditions within the system following resolution of the fault.
  • Accept Faults [Volt Driven]
    • Used to acknowledge or accept reported fault conditions, allowing the system operator or connected equipment to confirm fault handling.

Contact Outputs

The VIPEDIA controller supports up to 12 configurable contact outputs, arranged in two groups of six. These outputs provide system status indications or allow control of external equipment such as relays, visual indicators, building management systems, and other third-party devices. Digital outputs are open-collector outputs and can be configured as active high or active low.

Output Functions

  • Busy Output
    • Activated when a selected audio route is active.
    • Indicates when a zone or system resource is in use.
    • Can be used to control external equipment via relays or interface with legacy PA systems.
  • Fault Output
    • Provides a signal when the system detects a fault condition.
    • Allows connection to external monitoring equipment or fault indicators.
  • VA State Output
    • Provides status information relating to Voice Alarm system conditions.
    • Can indicate alarm states or operational modes.
  • VIPA Control Output
    • Provides control signals for integration with VIPA system functions.
  • Fan Control Output
    • Allows automatic control of equipment cooling fans based on configured system conditions.

Fire Panel Interface / Contact Triggers

Fire panel inputs allow external fire alarm systems to initiate predefined PAVA actions, such as evacuation messages, emergency announcements, alarm routing, or system state changes.

Features

BMB

BMB02 Connections
  • The Zenitel BMB (Barry's Magic Box) is a DIN rail-mounted I/O expansion unit designed to extend the input and output capabilities of a Zenitel PAVA audio router. Connected via the Control port, the BMB provides additional configurable GPIO for system control, monitoring, and integration with third-party equipment. Each unit supports 12 analogue inputs, 12 opto-isolated digital inputs, and 12 monitored open-collector digital outputs, enabling functions such as program selection, volume control, routing control, fault monitoring and reporting, and zone busy indication. Up to nine BMB units can be connected to a single host audio router, providing a scalable solution for applications requiring additional I/O capacity.
  • DC Supply available from BMB01 to power ANS sensors etc.
