Network Interface Configuration (Zenitel Connect)

From Zenitel Wiki

Introduction

Network Interface configuration is done from the tile Networks in the System section.

An ICX-510 has two network interfaces which can be configured, a Virtual Machine has minimum of one network interface.

Network configuration page (version 1.11)

Default configuration

ICX-510 unit

The two network interfaces of the ICX-510 unit are labeled Eth0 and Eth1.

The default configuration is:

  • Eth0: Static IP-address 169.254.1.5/16. By default web access is enabled on this interface.
  • Eth1: IP address by DHCP. By default web access is disabled on this interface.
OBS icon It is highly recommended to use “Static” IP address, as the devices need to know the IP-address of the server. Alternatively use DHCP, and link the MAC-address of the ICX-510 to a fixed IP address in the DHCP Server.

OBS icon It is strongly recommended not to use the 169.254.x.x/16 range in production environment. This range is reserved for link-local addressing (APIPA), which computers automatically assign themselves when they cannot get an IP address from a DHCP server. Because these addresses are not routable and only work on the local link, using them intentionally in a VoIP intercom system can cause connectivity instability, discovery problems, and incompatibility with routing, VLANs, or centralized management.

OBS icon IP addresses are given in CIDR notation

Virtual Machine

A Virtual Machine may have multiple network interfaces. All interfaces are configured as DHCP. By default web access is enabled on the interface(s).

Network settings

Server Hostname

Server Hostname is mandatory and common to all interfaces. Needs to be set for one interface only.

Interfaces

Each network interface has the following options:

  • DHCP: Obtain IP settings from a DHCP server
  • Static: IP settings must be set manually (recommended)
    • IP-address
    • DNS
    • Alternate DNS
  • Disabled: Will disable this interface
  • Allow management access on this interface (from version 1.11): When enabled, the Zenitel Connect web interface can be accessed via this Ethernet interface. When disabled, web access through this interface is blocked. By default, management access is enabled on eth0 only, while eth1 has management access disabled. The system prevents management access from being disabled on both interfaces at the same time, as this would make the web interface inaccessible.

IP Routing

The IP Routing table (from version 1.11) is used when the Zenitel Connect needs to communicate with devices located outside its local subnet. Routes define where IP packets should be forwarded when the destination is not directly reachable through one of the Zenitel Connect's Ethernet interfaces.

Three route types can be configured:

  • Default route (default gateway) - Used for all destinations for which no more specific route exists.
  • Network route - A route to a specific IP network.
  • Host route - A route to a single host.
Configure a Default Gateway

To define a Default Gateway, select the Plus icon and enter:

  • Destination net = 0.0.0.0/0 (will be translated to the text "Default route" when saving the settings)
  • Gateway = IP address of the default gateway
  • Interface = On which Ethernet interface the default gateway is located
  • Press to Save and Apply
Defining 10.9.8.1 as the Default Gateway on Eth1

OBS icon
  • Only one default route should be configured. If multiple default routes are defined, network communication may become unpredictable.
  • The configured gateway must be reachable through the selected Ethernet interface. For example, if gateway 10.9.8.1 is connected to Eth1, the route must also be configured to use Eth1.

Configure a Network Route

To define a route to one particular network, select the Plus icon and enter:

  • Destination net = IP address of the remote IP network in CIDR notation
  • Gateway = IP address of the gateway
  • Interface = On which Ethernet interface the gateway is located
  • Press to Save and Apply
Configure a route to network 10.9.3.0/24 through gateway 10.9.8.1 on Eth1

Configure a Host Route

To define a host route, select the Plus icon and enter:

  • Destination net = <IP address of the host>/32
  • Gateway = IP address of the gateway
  • Interface = On which Ethernet interface the gateway is located
  • Press to Save and Apply
Configure a route to the host 10.9.3.40 through Gateway 10.9.8.1 on Eth1. Note that the CIDR mask must be "/32"
