Using a temporary DHCP server to set Static IP Addresses (Zenitel Connect Pro)

Introduction

Zenitel devices are by default configured to DHCP. In a system without DHCP server, each device gets an IP-address in the 169.254.x.y range. It is impractical to scan this entire range, as it might take a long time to discover all devices.

A way around this is to configure a temporary DHCP which provides a limited range of IP-addresses. This range can then be scanned to discover the devices and add them to Zenitel Connect Pro. Once added they will be reconfigured with a static IP-address and the DHCP server can be removed from the network.

The procedure will be explained by using an example configuration. The aim is to configure a number of devices with static IP-addresses in the range 10.9.8.101 - 10.9.8.149.

See Adding Devices with Static IP Address (Zenitel Connect Pro)

Configuration of the temporary DHCP server

A possible DHCP server to use is TFTPD64, which can be downloaded from https://bitbucket.org/phjounin/tftpd64/downloads/. Select the appropriate version for your system and install the software. The installation file used for this article is Tftpd64-4.64-setup.exe.

Start the application and configure:

  • select the TAB DHCP server
  • in the field Server interfaces, select the appropriate network interface
  • click Settings and select the TAB DHCP
  • Set the IP pool start address. For this example the starting address is 10.9.8.101
  • Set the Size of pool. For this example the pool is 49 addresses
