Zenitel Dynamic Ambient Noise Sensor (DANS)

From Zenitel Wiki

DANS Front View

DANS01 (Dynamic Ambient Noise Sensor) measures the ambient background noise in a broadcast area, enabling the ASL system to automatically adjust the output volume accordingly.

In cases of high ambient noise (e.g. busy platform) the output volume is raised so that announcements are intelligible. In cases of low ambient noise the output volume is lowered so the announcements are not excessively loud.

Unlike ANS, DANS01 continues to operate during announcements. This enables the output volume of active broadcasts to change accordingly to changes in ambient noise (e.g. a train approaching a platform).

The information in this document is correct for the following firmware and software versions. Newer or older versions may behave differently:

  • Audio Router Host CP V4.2.0.6-P
  • Audio Router DSP V4.2.0.0-P
  • PAVA System Configuration Tool (PAVA SCT) V4.2.0.4-P

DANS01 sensors should be positioned using the following guidance:

  • DANS01 should be positioned and directed in such a way to minimise the measured level of announcement audio from loudspeakers as much as possible.
  • DANS01 should be directed towards likely sources of ambient noise. For example, areas where people congregate.
  • DANS01 should not be placed to localised sources of noise that would be unrepresentative of the area of coverage.
  • Large areas may require multiple DANS01.
  • One DANS01 may control more than one output, for instance if it is positioned at the junction of two outputs

Operation

The operation of the DANS depends entirely on what it's mode is set to:

DANS Type:

  • Gap – The DANS01 output volume is frozen whilst announcement audio is present on the DANS01 output.
  • Dynamic – The DANS01 output volume continues to be adjusted whilst announcement audiois present on the DANS01 output.

DANS Sensor Type:

  • Sum – The DANS01 attenuation calculation is based on the sum of all measured noise on allDANS01 sensors connected to this output.
  • Mean – The DANS01 attenuation calculation is based on the mean (average) of all measured noise of all DANS01 sensors connected to this output

Key Points

  • Real time dynamic ambient noise sensor
  • Requires one router input per DANS
  • Maximum 12 DANS per VIPEDIA-12-NET
  • Maximum 4 DANS per VAIA
  • Adjusted in the Amplifier Dynamic Tool
  • DANS control on local outputs only
